Hayfever in Ireland: how to get ahead of the pollen season

Hayfever can start before summer arrives and may continue well into autumn depending on grass, tree and weed pollen levels.

Start before symptoms peak

Antihistamines, nasal sprays and eye drops work best when they are matched to your symptoms and started early enough.

  • Use a daily non-drowsy antihistamine if sneezing and itching are your main symptoms.
  • Consider a nasal spray if blocked nose or post-nasal drip is the main issue.
  • Use lubricating or anti-allergy eye drops for itchy, watery eyes.
If you need treatment every day for weeks, ask us to check that you are using the right product in the right way.

When to get checked

Wheezing, shortness of breath, facial pain, fever or symptoms on one side only should be assessed by a healthcare professional.
