More than a shop counter. Our pharmacists offer vaccination clinics, health screening, fitting consultations and everyday practical services across our stores — most without a GP referral.
McCormack’s Pharmacy are participating in the national Covid-19 vaccine rollout.
Please complete the form to register your interest for a vaccine appointment. You will be contacted by a member of our team with a time and date. We are currently offering this service in our Tullamore, Newbridge and Clonmel locations.
While it is up to you to decide to get the vaccine, the HSE, the World Health Organization and the Department of Health strongly recommend that you do so as soon as it is offered to you. Covid-19 vaccines used in Ireland are safe and effective, and offer protection by teaching your immune system how to protect you from the virus. All vaccines used in the Republic of Ireland must be approved by the European Medicines Agency, which only approves a vaccine once satisfied that it is safe and effective.
Like all medicines, vaccines can have side effects. They are mostly mild or moderate — a sore arm or itching where the injection was given, feeling tired, feeling sick, swollen lymph glands in that arm, chills or a feverish feeling. Some people get no side effects at all. Serious side effects, such as an allergic reaction, are extremely rare.
Vaccine information leaflets are available at the pharmacy when you arrive. For up-to-date Covid-19 information, see the HSE immunisation website or the Health Products Regulatory Authority.
The seasonal flu vaccine protects against four strains of the flu virus — the strains most likely to be circulating this flu season.
The vaccine is available every year to adults and children at risk of flu and its complications.
The flu vaccine helps your immune system to produce antibodies — proteins that fight infection. If you have had the flu vaccine and you come into contact with the flu virus, the vaccine can stop you getting sick. It starts to work within two weeks.
You need the flu vaccine every year because the antibodies that protect you decline over time, and flu strains can change from year to year.
If you meet any of the criteria below, you are eligible for a free flu vaccine:
If you are in an at-risk group, you should get the flu vaccine during autumn.
The only way to know if you have high blood pressure is to get it measured — most people with high blood pressure notice no symptoms at all.
Average blood pressure is usually around 120 (systolic) over 80 (diastolic). High blood pressure, also called hypertension, causes silent damage to the blood vessels and the heart. If untreated, this damage progresses over time and may result in stroke or heart attack. These serious events occur at a younger age in people with high blood pressure than in people with normal blood pressure.
The service takes around five to ten minutes. We place a cuff on your arm connected to the blood pressure monitor and take your readings. The pharmacist in your chosen store will then give you the results and discuss the next steps with you. This might include diet and lifestyle advice, or a referral to your doctor.
It is important to have your blood pressure tested regularly. Speak to one of our pharmacists today about routine testing and any concerns you may have.
Asthma affects the airways — the small tubes that carry air in and out of the lungs. Getting your inhaler technique right matters.
In asthma, the airways become over-sensitive, reacting to things that would not usually cause a problem, such as cold air or dust. The muscles of the tube walls tighten, leaving little room for air to flow. The lining can swell and a sticky mucus clogs the breathing passages, so the chest has to work much harder to breathe.
Preventer or controller inhalers reduce inflammation of the airways over time and lower the risk of a severe attack. They give no instant relief, but build up protection over a longer period. Used properly, many people are symptom free and rarely need their reliever.
Reliever inhalers, usually blue, are taken as soon as symptoms appear. They work quickly by relaxing the muscles of the airways, opening them wider and making it easier to breathe. Everyone with asthma should carry one at all times, as attacks may come on suddenly with little warning.
Compression hosiery is designed to improve circulation by applying pressure to the legs, encouraging blood flow back to the heart.
Compression is usually tightest at the ankle and eases gradually further up the leg for optimum comfort. Compression hosiery also helps prevent the build-up of excess fluid in the legs, particularly around the ankles.
During a consultation, our pharmacist will take the correct measurements and help you choose and fit the right hosiery for you. Your consultation is carried out in one of our private consultation rooms, and new measurements are taken each time you need new hosiery. Our pharmacist will also advise you if you can avail of compression hosiery on the medical card scheme.
Your regular medicines, sorted by our pharmacy team into a sealed weekly pack organised by day and time of dose.
Blister packing takes the guesswork out of a multi-medicine routine. Rather than managing several boxes and bottles, each dose sits in its own sealed compartment, clearly labelled with the day and the time it should be taken, so it is easy to see at a glance whether a dose has been taken.
The service is popular with people taking several medicines each day, with carers managing medicines on someone else’s behalf, and with anyone who finds a weekly routine easier to keep on top of.
To get started, talk to our pharmacy team or call 052 6199329. We will take details of your current prescription, agree a collection or delivery routine with you, and coordinate repeat prescriptions with your GP.
